MUHLENBERG COUNTY, KY (10/12/11) – In the past, locals may have had difficulty finding a way to recycle, but that is not the case these days.
The county of Muhlenberg has put extra focus on recycling initiatives and most recently, Central City purchased new recycling bins for use by local residents.
According to Central City Mayor Barry Shaver, “These were purchased through a grant from the Kentucky Department of Waste Management, for the amount of $38,000 [thirty eight thousand dollars] and they were made here in the county by a locally owned business, Metal Works.”
The city was pleased to purchase four of the recycling bins, which accept paper, plastic, cardboard and aluminum. All of these materials are taken to the Muhlenberg County Opportunity Center to be recycled.
“I think we all get the point, it is very important that we learn to recycle, we need to make recycling a habit,” Mayor Shaver stated.
The mayor told reporters some important facts about your trash that you may not have known. “It takes a plastic milk carton 5 years to decompose, a tin can may take up to 100 years, a plastic bag 10-20years, a soda bottle 450 years, and a plastic cup up to 50 years.”
Central City has made it even more simple and convenient for locals to recycle with bins located on West Reservoir at the old Flynn building, across from Dairy Queen on 2nd Street, and in front of Tractor Supply on Everly Brothers Blvd.
“We have had great cooperation from everyone, and the recycling bins have been a success,” Mayor Shaver stated.
