MUHLENBERG COUNTY – 1st District Congressman Ed Whitfield made a stop in Greenville this past Saturday to speak to the community about the future of the coal industry.
Kenny Allen, VP of Operations, Armstrong Coal Company, introduced Congressman Whitfield as one of the biggest supporters of the coal industry and Kentucky jobs.
The Congressman believes that coal must be a part of our energy future. Although he says the Democratic Party is pushing for more “green” ways to create energy, there should be more focus on keeping jobs, especially in the Kentucky, and not continually putting up obstacles that will eventually kill the coal industry.
Coal, which is the least expensive way to produce energy, provides 92% of the electricity in Kentucky and over 50% nationally.
Whitfield has chaired over 25 hearings looking at national energy policies and way to promote coal and has been recognized as a leader in the House of Representatives for opposing extreme EPA regulations that would increase the cost of electricity prices and put jobs at risk. Whitfield reminded the community to think long and hard when going to the polls in November 2012.
Whitfield was accompanied by staff members Michael Pape and Ed West. The event was held at Veteran’s Mall next to the Courthouse. Thumbpickers Joe Hudson and Steve Rector provided musical entertainment. The meal was catered by Jean-Jean’s. Approximately 75 people attended the event.
